Tree Care and Removal in Mirabel: Permits and Property Considerations

Mirabel includes residential neighbourhoods such as Saint-Janvier, Saint-Canut, and Domaine-Vert, as well as large agricultural and wooded properties. Tree access and protections for the tree canopy vary by area.

Rules can change and depend on your property. Always confirm your project’s requirements with the municipality before work begins.

Tree removal authorization

The City requires authorization before removing a tree in an urban area. Dead, declining, diseased, or genuinely hazardous trees are among the reasons considered. Nuisances such as falling leaves or shade are not sufficient on their own. Woodlots and forest corridors are also protected and may require a forestry prescription.

Tree replacement and protection

The City says that, in general, an approved tree removal must be followed by replacement. The replacement tree’s size depends in part on the tree removed and its location; check the conditions in your authorization.

Mirabel has specific guidance for ash trees affected by the emerald ash borer. Consult its official page before cutting or moving ash wood.

Property considerations

Long driveways and large wooded areas may make some ground-based methods possible, but forest corridors, agricultural land, and wires serving outbuildings require planning for each property.

Before work near power lines

Safety first: are branches near electrical lines?

Never touch the tree or wires. Choose the type of line to see what to do. If you cannot identify it with confidence, keep your distance and contact Hydro-Québec.

If a wire is down, sparks are visible, or there is immediate danger, move at least 10 metres away and call 911.
