Branches near power lines? Review the safety guidance.

Safety and emergencies

A fallen or hazardous tree? Protect people first.

A tree on a home, a hanging branch, or damaged wires means you should keep your distance. This site does not provide emergency service or immediate dispatch.

Power lines that are damaged or down

Stay away from the tree, wires, and anything touching them. Do not try to move a branch or approach to take a photo. Call 911 if a person is in danger, there is a fire, or a wire is down. Report branches touching wires to Hydro-Québec at 1-800-790-2424.

Building damage

Move occupants away from the affected area. If the structure seems unstable or anyone is injured, call 911.

Document safely

Take photos only from a safe distance. Note the time and visible damage for your insurer.

Contact your insurer

If your property is damaged, contact your insurer. Check with them before arranging non-urgent work.

Before work near power lines

Safety first: are branches near electrical lines?

Never touch the tree or wires. Choose the type of line to see what to do. If you cannot identify it with confidence, keep your distance and contact Hydro-Québec.

If a wire is down, sparks are visible, or there is immediate danger, move at least 10 metres away and call 911.

After the immediate danger

Once the immediate danger has passed, ask an independent professional to assess the tree. Request a written description of the work, proof of insurance, and debris-handling terms. Also check applicable municipal requirements.
